General description of the collection: The Philip E. Gallagher photograph collection covers only the later part of General Gallagher's career as a general officer in Europe after 1946. There are three albums of Berchtesgaden photos from 1947, 1949, and 1951. There are numerous photos taken in France in 1952 and in 1955-1956, as well as other locations in Europe during this period. There is some photo coverage of Fort Holabird, MD and the Counter Intelligence Corps School from 1951 to 1953. One album covers the General's visit to Trieste and the 88th Infantry Division in 1952. Another is dedicated to his dog from 1946 to 1949. Most of the photos in this collection are of receptions, luncheons, presentations, parties, friends, and family. There are no photos from his service in World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII), or in China.

Philip Edward Gallagher (b. Mar. 13, 1897-d. July 18, 1976) was born at Fort Myer, Virginia. He received his commission in the infantry from West Point in 1918, and later served as Commandant of Cadets at the Academy in 1942 and 1943. He achieved the rank of brigadier general in February 1943, and commanded the 14th U.S. Division in 1946. He later sered as commanding general of Fort Gordon in 1956 and 1957, and retired from Army service in February 1957. From the description of Galla...
